I bought a Rockford Fosgate P400-2 and I went to install today. Everything went fine.

I have a t1 12" and I have it wired to 4 ohms and hooked up it to the amp. The amp says its runs 400w bridged.

It sounds good but after running it about 30 mins. its VERY hot, too hot to the touch! The protection never turned it off so wonder what would cause it to be so hot...I always read these amp run warm but not hot?

My settings are:

LP
punch eq: less than 1/4 up
gain: between 3-5

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Make sure you actually have the sub wired to 4 ohms (use a multimeter) and check to make sure you have your amp wired properly. If you have your sub miswired to a lower impedence than your amp is supplying the sub will try to draw too much current out of the amp and could make it overheat. Otherwise you may have a defective amp, give it a day or two and see what other input peopel have

thanks for the quick reply!

I should have the sub wired correctly.

I have the negative of the left coil going to the positive of the right coil.

the the positive from the left coil is going to the + of the bridged socket on the amp.....and the negative from the right coil is going to the - of the bridged socket on the amp.

I don't know if this helps, but do you have a pos. AND neg. wire going from neg/left to pos/right? I had a T1 12" bridged into a T400-2 that way and never had a single problem.

This may sound like a stupid question but what impedance is your woofer? Dual 2 or Dual 4?

No I only have 1 wire going going from left to right voice coil.

Ill try using 2 wire, hopefully that will do it but I cant see how that would make my amp so hot to the touch...but Im not an expert so I will try it and see...thanks!!

The sub is a 2ohm dvc. Thanks!!

well tried the 2 wires and still hot to the touch after about 30mins of play.

the amp protection never goes off so am I to assume its ok to keep running the amp.

if anyone here is using a punch P400-2 does it run hot to the touch. Ive had power series amps in the past and they run warm but never too hot to touch...but this is my first punch series so I dont know if its normal for a power series amp to run hot.

what do yall think...do I have a lemon or is a punch amp supposed to run hot?

thanks for everyones help!!

In my old civic I used to have a p325.2 (i think) running 350 watts bridged to a pos sony xplod subwoofer and pounded that sub to death, and i never noticed the amp getting hot, infact I had it sitting under carpet in the back of a hatchback and never had any issues with heat or it going in to protection, even when i had the gain cranked almost all the way up (hey i was in high school i didnt know any better, haha). I'm now using it as a speaker amp since I have from then upgraded to a T1 and an MTX thunder elite amp and it still is going strong, mounted at a 45 degree angle. In fact, that thing feels cool like it does after sitting over night. I would start from scratch, take all the wiring off, go to the wiring wizard, make sure every wire is hooked up correctly and get a multimeter to verify your ohm load. if you dont have one, slap it on your credit card at home depot, test it in the parking lot and take it back just to make sure. Otherwise id say you might have a lemon, which seems to be a rarity among rockford products. Good luck

it is a refurbished amp so maybe it was a refurbed lemon...

I just got done rewiring everything, everything it wired back and it still gets hot.

i have a fluke mm and its in the correct range

amp is reading 3.73 ohm

sub is reading 3.71 ohm

so if everything it hooked up right and they are both reading close to 4ohm I guess that means I got a lemon.

Guess I'll try out that new 500w RF prime, and this time NO refurb...they are too new anyway for any refurbs to be on the market.

bummer man, refurbs aren't generally a good idea because they do not use the same qu ality products as rockford, rockford has an internet sales warning on their homepage that is a good read. The prime series are ok, but keeep in mind at 2 ohms, that amp is 58% efficiency, which means (mental math) its going to drwaing around 900 watts of power from your charging system. so if its about money and you can afford even the p500.1 (which is 12 percent more efficent at 1 ohm which is a big difference, and the t500 which is 76% efficiency ( which still isnt that great) try and upgrade, your electrical system will be happier and your bass will be better, good luck

Actually Mikey Rockford refurbishes their units with the same parts that go into new amps.

Now if it was a third party company that fixed the amp then of course we can't guarantee it's quality but any Rockford Refurbished amp should perform just as well as a new one.

Ahhh, i did not realize that it was a rockford refurb, i just assumed you got in on ebay or something of that nature, hopefully rf does find something wrong with it and you can get your system working. I too am having some issues with my box right now, and will not have bass for a day or two (redoing the front baffle on the box) and it is such a bummer to not have bass
